What I Learned the Hard Way, So You Do Not Have To

When I started out as a freelance strategist and copywriter, I made every mistake I now help other people avoid.

I pitched to sell instead of to solve. I described what I did instead of what clients would get. I used industry language that made complete sense to me and meant nothing to the person on the other side of the table. And I watched proposals go quiet, clients disappear after promising conversations, and opportunities go to people I knew were doing less interesting work than I was.

For a long time, I thought the problem was my pricing. Then I thought it was my portfolio. Then I thought it was the economy, the market, the timing, all the things we tell ourselves when we do not want to look at the real problem.

The real problem was that I was not clear. Not about what I was actually selling, not about who it was genuinely for, and not about why someone should choose me specifically over everyone else offering something similar.
